The Limits of Equality: An Economic Analysis of the Israeli Kibbutz

چکیده

The Israeli Kibbutz movement is a voluntary cooperative based on equality, mutual assistance, partnership, and common ownership of property. It is one of the last socialist experiments that successfully survived for most of the twentieth century. How did a voluntary egalitarian institution exist in a more capitalist environment? What level of equality can be sustained as an equilibrium? I study the Kibbutz movement as a risk-sharing, self-enforcing institution, whose redistributive ability is limited by adverse selection. I build a simple model of the Kibbutz movement and test it using new micro-level data sets I assemble from primary sources. The predictions of the model are consistent with the Kibbutz’s equal income distribution, the relative quality of migrants from the Kibbutz, its membership patterns, the shift away from full equality, and the substantial heterogeneity across Kibbutzes with respect to the magnitude of the differential reforms. ∗Stanford University. The Limits of Equality: Insights From the Israeli Kibbutz

The Israeli Kibbutzes, which are voluntary communities based on income equality, are puzzling since they might unravel due to moral hazard and adverse selection. Yet Kibbutzes persisted for most of the 20th century. How did voluntary communities based on income equality persist within a capitalist environment? What level of equality can they sustain? This paper employs unique data sets at both ...

THEORIES OF GENDER EQUALITY: Lessons from the Israeli Kibbutz

Because the Israeli kibbutz is innovative in collective ownership, production, consumption, and child care, and in part also because it is erroneously assumed to have once had a gender-egalitarian ideology and structure, it is taken to be a valid test case for many theories explaining or justifying gender inequality or gender equality. This article argues that the kibbutz cannot serve as a test...

The Limits of Equality: An Economic Analysis of the Israeli Kibbutz

In effect, the industry adopted both approaches. For southerners, companies almost universally (yet independently) employed every possible means of legally voiding policies. Alternatively, in the North, the industry embraced its public duty—or at least wrapped itself in the image of that duty. While creating a united front and collectively charging an exorbitant war premium to cover the uncerta...

Organizational Efficiency and Egalitarian Democracy in an Intentional Communal Society: The Kibbutz

Kibbutzim differ from one another in democratic and egalitarian practice and in equality itself. We explore hypotheses in 49 kibbutzim that attempt to explain these differences by the opposing effects of a technological imperative that implies a rational striving for economic efiiciency and an ideological imperative that implies a commitment by members to traditional kibbutz values. Cross secti...

Testing Self-Selection in Migration: Evidence from the Israeli Kibbutz

This paper tests a key theoretical prediction of public finance, that redistribution discourages the participation of productive individuals. Specifically, I use a longitudinal data set to test whether and to what extent the intensive redistribution practiced by Israeli kibbutzim encourages exit of more productive individuals and entry of less productive ones. The findings support the theoretic...
